It's a Weston Hotel. not a Westin . That means they don't honor Bonvoy . First of all, this hotel at the heart of Asama Onsen was closed for good in 2006. Its wide pilotis, water feature, and overall 60s modern aesthetic are pretty attractive, so I wish someone would renovate the building to repurpose it. They can even turn it to The Westin Matsumoto. ウェスティン ではない。ウエストンである。だから Bonvoy は使えない。そもそも 浅間温泉 の真ん中にあるこのホテルは2006年に廃業している。幅広のピロティ、水盤、そして60sモダンな全体の味わいがとても魅力的なので、誰かリノベして生き返らせてほしい。ウェスティン松本にするのもいいかも。

Without Matsumoto Jujo , I may not have noticed that this 1000-year-old hot spring destination even exists. So I guess the idea of making the boutique hotel a catalyst to revitalize the whole Asama Onsen area really works. 松本十帖 がなかったら、千年の歴史を持つこの温泉場が存在することさえ知らないでいただろう。そう考えると、一つのブティックホテルを浅間温泉エリア全体の再活性化に役立てるというアイデアは実に効いている。

Go up the narrow street in front of Matsumoto Jujo , and you will find a book cafe, "Philosophy and Sweets," run by the hotel. 松本十帖 の前にある狭い道を上がっていくと、ホテルのブックカフェ「哲学と甘いもの」が見つかる。 Another cafe, "Oyaki Cakes and Coffee," which plays a role as the hotel's reception , becomes a bar in the evenings. Having these remote facilities reflects the idea by Matsumoto Jujo to revitalize the whole Asama Onsen hot spring area by letting hotel guests stroll around the town. It's an excellent concept, adaptable to any local community that needs to be rediscovered. ホテルのレセプションとしての役割も持っているもう一つのカフェ「おやきと、コーヒー」 は、日が暮れるとバーになる。松本十帖がホテルから離れた場所にこのような施設を持っているのは、街の中でホテルのゲストを回遊させることにより、浅間温泉エリア全体の再活性化を狙っているから。魅力を再発見してもらうことが必要などんな地方コミュニティにも応用できる、優れたコンセプトだと思う。

Our second room is more spacious than the first room and has an even bigger terrace. The sunset over the Hida Mountains, a.k.a. Northern Japan Alps, viewed from a private semi-outdoor hot spring bath is quite a show. 二つ目の部屋は 一つ目のもの よりさらに広く、テラスもさらに大きかった。半露天のプライベート温泉から眺める飛騨山脈a.k.a. 北アルプスの夕焼けはなかなかの見もの。

I checked out the other tower of Matsumoto Jujo , which took over the name of the more than 330-year-old predecessor  ryokan Koyanagi. They say the hotel is more family-friendly than Matsumoto Honbako I'm staying at, and it has a restaurant that welcomes kids. A Koyanagi's old Japanese-style warehouse is still there as if it were an annex of the hotel.  松本十帖 のもう一つの棟を覗いてみた。こちらのホテルは、330年以上にわたってこの地にあった元の旅館「小柳」の名を受け継いでいる。僕が泊まっている松本本箱よりも家族向けらしく、子ども歓迎のレストランもついていた。敷地の中に残された小柳の古い蔵は、まるでホテルの別館のよう。

A moonlit evening in the old hot spring town . Around midnight, I went to the hotel 's small bathhouse inspired by the traditional public hot spring cabin.  月が 古い温泉場 を照らしている。真夜中近くに、伝統的な風呂小屋を再現したという ホテル の小さな浴場へ行ってみた。

The hotel lobby with a small bar looks like an extension of the library . Dinner and breakfast are served at the restaurant surrounded by bookshelves. While enjoying a beautiful dinner course using local ingredients, we could have a chat with their lead chef Chris who was at INUA in Tokyo before. 小さなバーがついた ホテル のロビーは、 ライブラリー の延長のような感じ。本棚に囲まれたレストランもあって、ディナーとブレックファーストはそこで用意される。地元の食材を使った美しいディナーコースを楽しんでいる間、以前は東京のINUAにいた料理長のクリスとおしゃべりすることができた。

I made my way further downstairs and found the Bookcase for Children renovated from a smaller spa room. It's like a secret base for kids filled with picture books. Same as the Bookcase for Adults , the water faucets remain in their original position. The former bathtub here has become a ball pool, so you can still jump in. さらに階下へ降りていったら、小さめの浴場を改造した「こども本箱」を発見。ここはキッズのために作られた秘密基地風の部屋で、絵本がいっぱい並んでいる。 「オトナ本箱」 同様、水栓が元の場所に残されていた。浴槽はボールプールに生まれ変わったので、今でも飛び込むことができる。

The reason why they call one of the hotel buildings "Matsumoto Honbako (Bookcase) is it actually has the libraries under the rooms. They renovated the old hot spring spa rooms and turned them into a place where the guests can enjoy reading whatever they are interested in among the countless selections. The vacant hot tubs and water faucets are still there as a reminder that these rooms used to be bathing rooms. I started to explore from the Bookcase for Adults. ホテル の一棟が「松本本箱」と呼ばれる理由は、部屋の下に本当に本箱、つまりライブラリーがあるから。以前の宿で温泉大浴場だった場所を改造して、数えきれないほどそろえられたラインナップから、ゲストが好きなものを読めるようになっている。空の浴槽と水栓が残されているので、かつてここが風呂だったのは明らか。まずは「オトナ本箱」から探検してみた。   The private reading booths hidden behind the bookshelves are ideal for remote working. 書棚のうしろに隠されているプライベート読書ブースは、リモートワークにも最適。
