HOW CREATIVITY CAN CHANGE THE CITY

Image
I was invited to join the course entitled "Portland: Creativity and urbanology" of Freedom University held at Ikejiri Institute of Design in Setagaya as a speaker. Matsuzaki-san  (left), President of Herman Miller Japan, and Akio (right), my ex-colleague at Wieden+Kennedy Tokyo and my peer at  ISHINOMAKI 2.0 , also joined the session. We introduced the similarity between Portland, the hometown of Wieden+Kennedy, and Ishinomaki, the city we have been supporting since the 311 tsunami. In both cities, creativity, DIY spirit, and personal commitment have become key drivers of positive changes in community and what's happening in cities like Portland can bring some inspiration to Ishinomaki. We could have a really wonderful time thanks to an enthusiastic audience and the hospitable organizer.

This is a beautiful island. But if this place likes to get away from mass tourism and evolve into a fascinating destination for savvy high-end vacationers, I think they need a bit more sophisticated concept and strategy.
