TRACES OF SOVIET MINSK: SONS OF THE FATHERLAND MONUMENT AND THE NATIONAL ACADEMIC BOLSHOI OPERA AND BALLET THEATRE OF THE REPUBLIC OF BELARUS

I walked along Svislash river from House of Fashion and visited an islet in the river called "The Island of Tears". The islet has Sons of the Fatherland Monument, and it embraces grieving mothers, sisters, and widows who lost their sons, brothers, and husbands in the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s. Their faces are haunting, especially when you see them in snow.

A few minutes walk from the Island of Tears will take you to the Belarusian version of the Bolshoi Theater. This majestic wedding cake opened in 1933 and still serves as the main opera and ballet theater of the country.
