METRO DE MEDELLÍN LÍNEA A

One of the key drivers of Medellín's dramatic transformation from a murder capital to an up-and-coming tourist destination is its urban transit system. Today, I try to experience it starting from Metro Line A—the first line they opened in 1995.

At a ticket kiosk in Poblado Station, which is the nearest to my hotel, a kind young man who speaks English told me that a multiple-ride ticket is available only at San Antonio Station in central downtown.

...and got this: Medellín's version of Suica. This rechargeable contactless smart transit card has your name on it. So you need to present your passport when they issue it for you. Luckily I had a photocopy of my passport in Evernote app on my iPhone. No one wants to carry the passport around in the city once known for violence and crime.
