10 YEARS OF ISHINOMAKI LABORATORY

I checked out the exhibition "JYU: 10 Years of Ishinomaki Laboratory" held at Karimoku Commons Tokyo, a showroom and exhibit space which Japanese furniture brand Karimoku has in Nishiazabu. Ishinomaki Laboratory was launched as a community craft studio for the people in Ishinomaki, a city in north eastern Japan, right after the tsunami hit the region in March 2011. I still vividly remember when I saw the wooden prototype bench designed by the architect Keiji Ashizawa and built by local high schoolers—their first product—in downtown Ishinomaki a few months after the disaster. Over last ten years, Ishinomaki Laboratory has been collaborating with various designers and teams globally and their products are currently made in more than 10 countries/regions. The product line-up has also been expanded and it now includes a fish-shaped cooking board and DIY wooden animal kits. At this exhibition celebrating their amazing journey, I was luckily reunited with the factory manager Chiba-san after a long time.
