INTO ASHIO VALLEY: ASHIO CARS

At Ashio Rail Station, you can find several preserved rolling stocks associated with JR (JNR) Ashio Line. One of two DMUs here is the KiHa 35 painted in so-called "cod roe pink." It was a workhorse for the non‐electrified routes around the Tokyo metropolitan area when I was a teenager.

The other one is the KiHa 30. Both DMUs have a unique way to attach the passenger doors.

The TaKi 29300 "For Strong Sulfuric Acid Only" tank car. It belonged to FURUKAWA CO., LTD., which was the owner of Ashio copper mine and smelter.

Once upon a time, there was a caboose. Back then, the freight train in Japan usually had one of these cabooses at the tail. This is the Yo 8000 model.

And two small diesel locomotives with side rods—the Kyosan Sangyo 10-ton and the Nihon Yusouki 8-ton. FURUKAWA used them to handle freight cars at the train yard. Nihon Yusouki is now a part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries group.
