I found an eye-catching office building at the site adjacent to
Myonichikan. It has a Wright-esque design context and window frames. This is the headquarters of Fujin No Tomo Sha—a publisher founded in 1903 by the couple who founded Jiyu Gakuen Academy, the owner of Myonichikan. The building was designed by Raku Endo—a son of Arata Endo, who built Myonichikan and Imperial Hotel with Frank Lloyd Wright, and the last Japanese apprentice of FLW. So it's no surprise if we see the homage to the FLW design in his work. This is another treasure of Ikebukuro.
明日館に隣接する場所で、目を引くオフィスビルを見つけた。デザインのコンテクストと窓枠がかなりライトっぽい。これは、明日館のオーナーである自由学園を作った夫妻が1903年に創設した出版社、婦人之友社の本社ビル。フランク・ロイド・ライトと一緒に明日館や帝国ホテルを作った遠藤新の息子であり、日本人としてはライトの最後の弟子だった遠藤楽が設計した。だからデザインにライト建築へのオマージュが見えるのは不思議ではない。池袋の宝がここにも。
