TOKI

Heading back to Tokyo from Echigo Yuzawa Station, which looks empty, on the Joetsu Shinkansen Toki service. Toki, meaning crested ibis—an iconic bird for the Niigata region—is a historical name for a train that runs between the Tokyo area and Niigata, originally used for the limited express service in the pre-Shinkansen era.

ひと気のない越後湯沢駅から新幹線ときで東京へ戻る。新潟を象徴する鳥の朱鷺を意味する「とき」は、新幹線完成以前の特急の時代から首都と新潟を結ぶ列車につけられてきた歴史ある名前。
